Earliest meeting: Monday 16th January 1871
Final meeting: Monday 16th January 1871
The Tyne and Wear town of Gateshead, on the southern bank of the River Tyne with Newcastle on the opposite bank, was at one time part of County Durham. In the latter part of the 19th century the town held its own race meeting administered by the Gateshead Hunt Committee. The meeting was staged on Monday 16th January 1871 on Gateshead Borough Gardens in the presence of a very large crowd. The opening Gateshead Hunt Steeplechase saw Mr Applegarth’s Carbineer fend off his sole opponent Jealousy, while later in the day the Borough Yeomanry Cup was won by Mr Temple’s Little Nell from Minns. This is the only occasion when results from Gateshead Hunt meetings were reported.
